Sam White (Moderator): We are about 10 minutes out, but I'll let you start queuing up questions now. Remember the main topic for today is the Beta Program itself. We can't really answer a lot of deep questions regarding features, drivers, and such.
James Adams [MS] (Expert): Hi everyone! I'm James, and I handle Setup, Activation, Microsoft Update, Terminal Services, and some other miscellaneous bug categories. We're all pretty excited to have this chat, and I'm looking forward to answering your questions!
Jessep Bangham [MS] (Expert): Hey everybody! For anyone who has been part of one of our beta chats before, you might recognize me, I'm Jessep Bangham and am the "triage guy" for IE7. ;) For anyone who hasn't taken part in any of our chats before, welcome!
Anouar CHELH [MS] (Expert): Hi everyone
Sam White (Moderator): Hello. My name is Sam White and I work on the Windows Beta Team running these chats and managing other Beta Community items such as the newsgroups. Today I'll be the Moderator. Let's get underway the the Experts introducing themselves. Remember the main topic for today is the Beta Program itself. We can't really answer a lot of deep questions regarding features, drivers, and such.
Christina [MS] (Expert): Hi. I’m Christina and I work with the beta team with beta coordination, adding testers, answering email, sending notifications, partnering with internal groups, adding content on Microsoft Connect and a bunch of other miscellaneous items.
Dean Frost [MS] (Expert): Hi, my name is Dean Frost and work on the Beta Team working with setup bugs.
Rich Lieb[MS] (Expert): Hello everyone, my name is Rich Lieb and I handle application compatability bugs
Anouar CHELH [MS] (Expert): Hi, my is anouar and I work for the Vista beta bug triage team, I process bugs related to the built-in apps, games and IIS
Lara Jones [MS] (Expert): Hi everyone, I work on the Beta team triaging imaging, printing and device support bugs.
Vince Smith [MS] (Expert): Hi, I'm Vince Smith and I develop the tools we use on the Windows Beta team. I own the feedback system specific to Windows, including the Microsoft Beta Client.
Xi Wu [MS] (Expert): Hello, my name is Xi Wu and I work on the Windows Beta Team working with video driver, USB core and power management.
Jessep Bangham [MS] (Expert): Q: Seems like a lot if not all of the Vista team members are super busy these days. Would you comment on whether this is slowing the beta down and whether any thing can be done to get them more time to interact with the beta testers? A: It always seems to get slower right after the initial peak of bugs have been reported. We have gotten past the peak of incoming issues and it's a matter now of going through everything, taking the time to focus on the issues so we can get them resolved properly and effectively. We are getting a LOT of work done and while it may seem to take a little longer right now, it will settle back down soon.
Tenny_MS (Expert): Hey everyone, I'm Tenny and I work on the Windows Beta Team testing the bug process and tools.
EleeY [MS] (Expert): Hello Everyone. I'm Elee and I handle Vista file systems, networking, and Windows backup.
RichardD[MS] (Expert): Hi, my name is Richard Dominguez and I work on all devices relating to Core Storage/Audio/Biometrics/Security.
Mike Adams[MS] (Expert): Welcome all, I'm Mike Adams and work in conjunction with Carl to field all the shell issues.
Paul Donnelly [MS] (Expert): Hello, I'm Paul Donnelly and overall my team is responsible for the Vista and Longhorn beta program.
Gawain OConnor [MS] (Expert): Hi, I'm Gawain O'Connor. I work on TCP/IP, wireless, and home networking bugs and issues dealing with Windows Mail.
Carl D [MS] (Expert): Hello Everyone. I'm Carl and I handle Vista Shell, MC, WMP, and Server.
Tony Chu [MS] (Expert): Hi everyone, my name is Tony Chu. I process security and admin related bugs.
Jeff DeVos (Expert): Hi, I'm Jeff and I work on the Windows Beta Team. I manage the overall investigation and processing of bug feedback and coordination with our International beta programs. I also work on some of the backend tools used to gather and process beta feedback.
Carl D [MS] (Expert): Q: are you going to send MCE devices to all the tech beta testers ? ;) please tell me you will ^_^ or, what are the requisites to partecipate in the MCE test? A: This program is not specific to our Beta. Separate program. Please feel free to send me mail and I can forward your questions along to the team that runs this.
Mike Adams[MS] (Expert): Q: Is this just a general chat, or is it specific? A: This falls under the general Beta Customer chat time. :)
Carl D [MS] (Expert): Q: Regarding the beta test of Media Center in Windows Vista, is there a possiblity that people from countries not listed in the given list to receive the appropriate hardware devices? A: Same answer as the hardware question. Drop me a line and I can send it along to the folks running this.
Paul Donnelly [MS] (Expert): Q: Is it concrete that there will be a feature complete February CTP? A: Noting is every over until it's over, but right now, we are fully on target for our feature complete plans. CTP's have been made a quality oriented milestone but even so it's looking good to get another one soon.
Jeff DeVos (Expert): Q: When will the Bug Feedback actually improve? How far away is cinnect 1.1? A: Connect 1.1 was slated for the end of this month (Jan.), but is now scheduled for release in early Feb. If you have questions on specific beta feedback issues we can try to address them.
Sam White (Moderator): Q: If you had a choice,Would you go 64 bit or 32. A: I would go with 64bit myself... though depending on your driver situation that might be a mitigating factor.
Tenny_MS (Expert): Q: I try to search for submitted bugs that I know are out there, and can't find them. Will there be any improvements on the bug report search front? A: There are a couple bugs with Search that should be resolved soon.
Paul Donnelly [MS] (Expert): Q: For the next CTP will we be given keys for all of the different SKUs, or can you tell us exactly when we might start getting access to some other SKUs. When will they be more than placeholders? A: We are working on SKU plans right now. I can't commit for sure right now on a date but it shouldn't be long and we'll be able to provide you with the different SKU's to test on.
Jessep Bangham [MS] (Expert): Q: Compared to previous OS betas Vista seems to be a little less intense (i.e.: a lower level of activity on the Ngs). Is that by design? A: No, this is not design as we want to try and stay active in the newsgroups however each individual person handles things like newsgroup activity differently per area and thus there might seem to be more fluxuation in the amount of responses or information coming from us. Also, we are pretty slammed with issues right now as this is the busiest period per build (after the big rush of bugs and getting the duplicates sorted out and focusing on the more difficult and complex issues) however this will change as we get past the big chunk of bugs we are dealing with.
Carl D [MS] (Expert): Q: Will Vista testers get access to Windows Media Player 11 betas outside of the public beta? Or is that an entirely seperate issue? A: For the moment I will have to say separate. I haven't heard anything on this. I'll check for you. Those of you interested in this drop me a line.
Paul Donnelly [MS] (Expert): Q: will the next build be february ctp? or beta2? ;) how "near" are we to a feature complete build? ;) A: Please see my answer to Q#1.
Carl D [MS] (Expert): Q: My mail is a-carld@microsoft.com
Jarrod [MS] (Expert): Q: If you had a choice,Would you go 64 bit or 32. A: Depends on your processor. If you have 64bit processor go with the 64bit, since it will have certain performance advantages. If you have a 32bit processor you can only go with the 32 bit OS.
Mike Adams[MS] (Expert): Q: I have a Inspiron 9300 laptop with 2 gigs of ram that was purchased in November....but it hangs when Vista loads using 100% CPU and slowly on the task manager the ram dimishes.....after 5 hours it hangs because it runs out of memory.....any suggestions? A: I would definitely bug this if you haven't already, at least that way its documented. I would also suggest posting this in the newsgroups. There are still a lot of "one-off" issues popping up, some have work arounds and others are dependent on drivers/support.
Jessep Bangham [MS] (Expert): Q: Anna, can we have more time to do feaure focus's? A: Anna isn't here unfortunately however I will pass on your question to her and ask her to respond via the feature focus newsgroup.
EleeY [MS] (Expert): Q: Are you planning to create a GUI application for BCDEdit, or will it be integrated in a newer version of MSConfig, so that users can edit the Boot Store easily? A: Currently there appears to be no future plans for a BCDEdit GUI. The only shipments avaliable currently are msconfig, and startup and repair settings. However you can go ahead and file a support for GUI format. As for now, please visit http://www.microsoft.com/technet/windowsvista/library/85cd5efe-c349-427c-b035-c2719d4af778.mspx for more information regarding the use of BCDEdit.exe.
Paul Donnelly [MS] (Expert): Q: Are we still getting new testers for the Vista/IE7/Longhorn Server beta? A: Yes. We had 10,000 at Beta 1 and we have over 15,000 now in 112 countries. We are adding more each week as well.
Carl D [MS] (Expert): Q: CarlD: send you mail, to what address? A: Sorry Karl...I assumed :) a-carld@microsoft.com Contact me and I can send your requests along.
Sam White (Moderator): Q: Will there be an option for the home user to have super-administrator rights, so that all things that one could do in XP can be done in Vista without jumping through hoops? A: If you are asking if UAP can be turned off, the answer is yes it can be turned off by editing the local security policy. That pretty much makes things work like they did in Windows XP.
Paul Donnelly [MS] (Expert): Q: Are we going to see another IE7 release for XP soon? A: Those guys are working hard and I can't give you a date but you will likely see something before Beta 2 of Vista.
Jeff DeVos (Expert): Q: How will the beta testing programme differ after the public preview is released? A: The public preview shouldn't affect the the Technical Beta" program. We'll still release builds and take feedback in the same fashion.
Carl D [MS] (Expert): Q: to carl re q 9 and 17: please give us again your email address ;) A: Quick...Catch! a-carld@microsoft.com :)
Sam White (Moderator): Q: Is the Sidebar coming back in the Feb CTP? A: There are some much asked for features coming in the next build. For specifics, you will have to wait. :)
Rich Lieb[MS] (Expert): Q: Are we a well behaved group of Technical Testers? A: For the most part yes! Those who aren't , we know who you are and you will be punished!! j/k ;-)
Vince Smith [MS] (Expert): Q: How comes most bugs are resolved as "Other"? Even if it says "this will be corrected by Beta2", there should be some acknowledgement that a tester is helping the team identify possible errors. A: This is due in large part to there being only a few possible resolutions in our master bug database (for the whole product). This has always beem a balancing act, where we don't want too many resolutions for internally filed bugs, but we need more for externally filed bugs. I plan on working on improving this in our next version of Windows beta tools (not Connect). As beta testers, your input is always helping us find possible errors. We just need to improve the communication back to the sites. -Vince
RichardD[MS] (Expert): Q: Are you working to give us more drivers in 64 bits... A: We are working with the vendors and encourging them to provide us driver packages that will be compliant with Vista. Ultimately we do not create drivers for 3rd party devices. Though ideally we want every device to have Vista ready drivers, its ultimately up to the vendors to write the drivers.
Sam White (Moderator): Q: Will the XBOX 360 Button on the controllers play a role in something in vista, as rumored before? A: I haven't heard those rumors, so I have no idea.
Sam White (Moderator): Q: Do you plan on separating the Windows Longhorn Server and Windows Vista betas into separate beta programs anytime soon? A: Yes, after the Vista ships the server beta will continue on.
Carl D [MS] (Expert): Q: WMP doesn't work with the current verisions of Napster......any idea of how to test the DRM features of Vista at this point with Napster or other services? A: From what I can gather, for Napster, we are waiting on information from them. Until we get that the issue is still active and no workarounds known.
Tony Chu [MS] (Expert): Q: If UAP can be turned off like that, could a .bat file or something do it, which would leave it open to be turned off by a 3rd party spyware? A: There is a plan in work for easy access through the Admin Management to turn off the UAP other than the usual Secpol command line. This feature will be available in the future release builds. Thank you for asking.
Mike Adams[MS] (Expert): Q: I've heard there is no drug policy for the vista team... is that true? lol A: 0 tolerance, we also have to look both ways when crossing the street.
Xi Wu [MS] (Expert): Q: Is the problem with SLI going to be fixed in the Feb CTP? A: The problem with SLI will get fixed but I am not sure if it will make it into Feb CTP
Jessep Bangham [MS] (Expert): Q: What’s it like being a member of the Windows Vista BETA Team, are there any moments when you say to yourself, oh God, I can’t take this anymore? A: Personally I really enjoy it especially when James and Dean bring the punch and pie. ;) As for any "bad" moments? Not really, those stress balls do wonders. j/k In all honesty it's really a great position to be in and while I can only answer specifically for myself, I'm really enjoying it!
Gawain OConnor [MS] (Expert): Q: Why was Microsoft Mail left out of Server 5270 build? A: The only answer I got was that the server version is a different sku.
Paul Donnelly [MS] (Expert): Q: How comes TAP gets more frequent builds? If theres a current build stable enough for release to partners, surely the bug-submitting testers should get it, shouldn't they? A: Actually so far on Vista they have gotten exactly 1 build that the beta program has not. I will see to it that the beta program gets the builds it needs and builds that meet our minimum quality criteria. There are cases where there will be disparity. This is a reality of testing with the diverse customer set that we have.
Sam White (Moderator): Q: Sam, Is there any plans to improve usability of feedback mechanism ? Is yes - when we can expect them ? It's not easy to vote on suggestions or navigate over them. A: That part of the system is owned by the Connect Team. Those things are on the work item list, but I don't have any specific dates I can give you.
Mike Adams[MS] (Expert): Q: How many of you are on the Vista BETA Team, if you don’t mind? A: I just scanned the list quickly but it looks like everyone listed under experts is on the team.
Lara Jones [MS] (Expert): Q: When will we hear more about Metro (XPS), and when will it be usable in builds? A: XPS has it's own NG that is staffed with it's own developer. I would suggest asking questions within that NG. I recently approached D2 regarding feature focus and they mentioned testing XPS.
Tony Chu [MS] (Expert): Q: What is the plan for eventual WinFS integration in Windows Vista? A: This will be addressed in the future release notes.
Jarrod [MS] (Expert): Q: Is the best way to make a feature request to submit it as a bug? A: Yes, you may submit a feature request as a bug. We most likely won't use it in Vista at this point in the beta, but we will gladly consider it for the next major OS release.
Paul Donnelly [MS] (Expert): Q: are we going to see any IE7 beta build for XP before beta2? A: Please see #15.
Tenny_MS (Expert): Q: Is it expected that none of my bugs against Connect itself have been touched? A: Because the product is outside of the OS db, I tend to track them to make sure they're covered on the Connect side before closing them. Many are slated for a future release or consideration.
Carl D [MS] (Expert): Q: Is it true that the unidentified ATI driver on the AIW cards has to do with TV playback, such as the NSP driver being used in MCE 2005? A: I don't know...first I've heard of it.
Tony Chu [MS] (Expert): Q: I have turned off UAP with secpol and I still get Access Denied when trying to open many folders such as 'Documents and settings'. Do you have any idea if there is a way around this? A: There are many issues related to why you are seeing this access denied message. Please make sure that you are the owner of that Documents and Settings folder as well as being part of the Admin group.
Jeff DeVos (Expert): Q: How has the present group of testers helped to shape the product and the beta program itself? A: Your feedback helps find issues some issues we miss internally, and it also helps us prioritize issues we did know about. Our team reports to the project Shiproom meeting (where many decisions are made) and we drive the top issues from there. Your feedback also helps us improve our beta tools (e.g. the MBC) and the Connect portal (which will be implementing fixes based on your feedback in future releases of Connect).
Sam White (Moderator): Q: Are you more happy with Connect than with Windowsbeta regarding bug reporting, reliability, notifications etc? When do you expect improvements? A: There are some things that I like better and some things that need improvements. For example, the system we use to publish downloads is much more scalable. However I would like the list that we present to customers to be more customizable. I like the way we can provide feedback to you, but with the tracking page for customers was better. These are all on the list to be improved and will be released incrementally as time goes on. You won't see one really *HUGE* release, but every few months you should get some steady improvement.
RichardD[MS] (Expert): Q: For the storage driver which is not availale in base media Long horn server beta, can the W2K3 storage driver be used to install OS or it is needed to be Vista/Long Horn server storage driver ? A: Many W2k3/xp drivers should also work on Vista for mant Storage device. I would encourge you to sumbit a bug report with the PnP Id of the device, and a weblink to the driver package.
Jessep Bangham [MS] (Expert): Q: say you had a top secret Vista build ISO on your iPod or something, and it got lost/stolen. What would happen? Has it happened? A: iPod? Heathen! j/k Well honestly I can't imagine a case of that as the driver support would be atrocious but I'm fairly certain it hasn't happened. Do you know something that we don't? ;)
Dean Frost [MS] (Expert): Q: What will happen to tjhe install part of vista? Will it be faster than a 1 and a 15 mins A: The information we've been given is that it will average around 20 mins on a typical machine.
Vince Smith [MS] (Expert): Q: If you could make 3 changes to the Windows Vista Beta Program, what would they be? A: I ask this question every day :) I would like to improve our communication with the beta sites, I feel like we have a one way street where we release a build and wait for a flood of feedback. Things are improving with public bugs, feature focus & scenario voting, but we can do much better. I would also like to see the bug report quality improve. This is up to us (MS) to make the feedback interface (MBC, etc) easier to use. The 3rd change, and this is strictly my opinion, I would like to see the beta grow exponentially. hundreds of millions of people buy Windows, a beta program of 15,000 is not a accrurate representation of our customer base. First we have to make the tools better.
Anouar CHELH [MS] (Expert): Q: Is the best way to make a feature request to submit it as a bug? A: You can always submitt a feature request or a suggestion through a bug report
Jessep Bangham [MS] (Expert): Q: What do you guys think of Windows Code Name "Vienna Sausages"? lol A: Hmmm, I don't know. Has kind of a canned feel...
Mike Adams[MS] (Expert): Q: Is this just a general chat, or is it specific? A: accidentally reactivated question. See above.
Gawain OConnor [MS] (Expert): Q: Thanks Gawain. Then is there a new mail/newsreader program planned for the server build? A: I haven't heard anything about Windows Mail for the server build - I don't think there will be a new version specifically for it.
Lara Jones [MS] (Expert): Q: what does "D2" mean? A: "Digital documents platform and solutions team" This is the team that handles bugs for XPS, printers, scanners, and general imaging bugs.
Paul Donnelly [MS] (Expert): Q: How has the additional transparency helped the quality of Vista? Would you say that a similar level of transparency would have made XP a better product (not saying that it wasn't great already)? A: Maybe, but it's a matter of timing. Customers want transparency now and I'm not sure it was so important then. We'll really never know.
Sam White (Moderator): Q: Is it possible to change packaging for WDK ? Graphics testing suite ocupy 50% of it's current size and for most of developers it's not usefull. A: We don't own this component. If you file a bug we can assign it over to the WDK team.
Paul Donnelly [MS] (Expert): Q: Is planned to offer newer Builds also as VM's for Virtual PC/Server and VMWare/Player? Ok, this is not good for the VistaSetup Test but we can see other new thinks faster. A: At this time we have no plans for this.
Dean Frost [MS] (Expert): Q: Certain drivers that worked well under XP will not uninstall under Vista like my graphic card of Ati Rage 128. Will this issue be addresed and fixed A: This all depends on whether the manufacturer wants to support the device or not. In this case, if ATI chooses to provide a driver for your Rage 128 for Vista, then you're set.
Mike Adams[MS] (Expert): Q: Has Microsoft confirmed that the "My" in My Documents has been removed, or is "My" staying? A: Not sure how many legalities revolve around this question :) Newer builds appear as "Documents" without the my. Subject to change in future builds.
Carl D [MS] (Expert): Q: I am most interested in testing DirectShow and its new features. It is frustrating that there are no MS responses in the MultiMedia NG, and that docs regarding what's new apparently won't be available until after feature complete. Where are the DS folks? A: Buried under a bunch of shell bugs ;) Seriously though this is my fault. I'll try to get on more often.
Tony Chu [MS] (Expert): Q: Why does the Documeent folder not appear on the desktop when I put a check there under options A: This is a known issue and should be fixed in the future release builds. Thank you for asking this question. This is one of the most duplicated issue.
RichardD[MS] (Expert): Q: Are you working with Creative to have drivers and applications for SBA2 and X-Fi out, say to make 5.1 work properly? A: We are notifying Creative about certain errors that their drivers may be causing. The issue with SBA2 and X-Fi out is being looked into The 5.1 issue however, is not related to Creative; we are currently working on a fix for that.
Paul Donnelly [MS] (Expert): Q: are any more Senarios comming up to test? In different area's? A: Yes. And we working on adding and we're working on adding server scenarios as well
Gawain OConnor [MS] (Expert): Q: Why was the name changed from Microsoft Outlook Express to Microsoft Mail for Windows Vista A: It was actually changed to Windows Mail, I think primarily to differentiate it from Microsoft Outlook.
Vince Smith [MS] (Expert): Q: How difficult is it to run a BETA Program of this size? It’s over 15,000 and it’s continuing to grow. A: I think it's more difficult then we are given credit for :) Its why I come to work everyday, there are all sorts of issues I would never have thought about if I didn't work on this team. We try to provide as much human interaction as we can, but there are only 20 or so of us. My goal is to increase the number of beta sites and at the same time increase the level of customer interaction. both by our team and the individual product groups.
James Adams [MS] (Expert): Q: Will there be any way to sysprep on an image without having to reactivate? A: I'm not 100% sure, but I thought that was supposed to be the expected behavior. This might not be the case, but what I'd recommend doing is filing a bug on that, and I can get it over to the Activation folks and we'd be able to get a concrete answer that way.
Tenny_MS (Expert): Q: There is something wrong as this is the second log in to the chat that I was delayed since the password was not accepted. Is there something wrong? A: If you're copy/pasting, be sure there are no leading or trailing spaces.
Christina [MS] (Expert): Q: Are you more happy with Connect than with Windowsbeta regarding bug reporting, reliability, notifications etc? When do you expect improvements? A: Both Windowsbeta and Connect have had their positives. We're looking forward to seeing what new the versions will bring over the coming months for Connect.
Jessep Bangham [MS] (Expert): Q: What feature of IE7 will be added to the next build of Vista? A: Good try but all good things come to those who wait. ;)
RichardD[MS] (Expert): Q: Is the issue with creative labs and 5.1 sound cards going to be fixed in the future A: Yes - This issue is being looked into, and will get fixed. Unfortunately we do not have a build date for it.
Dean Frost [MS] (Expert): Q: Will the release notes be fixed under the install compoenent of Vista A: I just checked on this, and it supposed to be resolved in build 5295 or higher. Therefore, most likely, the next build we release to beta testers.
Jeff DeVos (Expert): Q: Jeff - Are you sure about Connect 1.1 in Feb ? I think it's April/May ... A: That is the information I have (and I just checked with Tenny, who meets with the Connect team to get status)
Vince Smith [MS] (Expert): Q: The Vista beta seems to be largely populated by non-developer users. Would Microsoft consider splitting WinFX off into its own Beta programme to ensure better developer resources and feedback? A: I'm going to copy this comment over to my work item list and look into it. I don't think it's something we can answer right now, but I think it's worth looking in to. One of the issues would be how many beta sites who would be interested in this, we would need to justify the costs.
Sam White (Moderator): Q: The biggest "contraversy" with Vista the new UI since the codebase switch. Will we get a chat with the User Experience team to discuss this? A: I have a chat coming up very soon with the Shell team. I'm expecting to send out the notice by the end of the week.
Anouar CHELH [MS] (Expert): Q: What bunbled applications (Paint, Notepad, Wordpad...etc), are getting a retouch for Vista? I mean, when you see that Linux offers openoffice and GIMP, and apple offers a dictionary and all that, Windows seems like its lacking in value. A: Our product team for those integrated apps are working to improve them along the way of Vista development.
Sam White (Moderator): Q: Will there be a new build of IE7 for XP along with the Feb CTP? A: There will be a new IE7 for XP coming out, no specific dates that we can give quite yet.
Lara Jones [MS] (Expert): Q: Will MCE support non-hardware MPEG-2 encoding TV Tuners? A: No, there were some of the ATI All-In-Wonder cards that were supported with 2005 for some OEMs that had access to the updated software encoder. But for Vista, at this time, no.
Mike Adams[MS] (Expert): Q: If a college student was looking for a summer internship, who would they contact? A: First step is to check your school to see if there is a career fair in town. I'd also go to www.microsoft.com and look through the careers section (lots of info listed). Worst case scenario there is some contact information listed in case nothing is in your area.
James Adams [MS] (Expert): Q: Will Windows Vista and/or Server Code Name "Longhorn"`s "logon" contain built-in support for alternate ways for authentication? A: I'm not sure what you mean. Can you be a little bit more detailed?
Jessep Bangham [MS] (Expert): Q: How much does the WindowsBeta Team interact with the Windows Product Team/Developers? A: We interact on a daily basis with the developers. The amount of interaction depends on the issue we are dealing with. As an example, getting a workaround for certain sites which couldn't recognize IE7's user agent string took some work and some verification and now we have a general workaround that we use regularly to solve a variety of 3rd party site related issues. So remember when testing IE7, if a site doesn't load properly or won't let you login or says your browser isn't recognized, go to fiddlertool.com/useragent.aspx and run the IE6 setting before filing. :)
Rich Lieb[MS] (Expert): Q: I hve seen that Nero 7 does not install under Vista Dec build. Is this going to be fixed for the next build? A: We are aware of the problems with installing Nero and are working to resolve this issue. This is a must pass application and Vista will not RTM without this program working properly. Whether or not this will be resolved in the next build, I cannot say.
Sam White (Moderator): Q: I am currently having major instability issues with build 5270 because of compatibility issues with my Creative Sound Blaster Live! 5.1 Card and my nVidia Geforce FX 5200 128MB AGP Card, they both cause 5270 to constantly blue screen, can I expect fix? A: This isn't the correct forum to ask about specific problems about particular bugs.
Tony Chu [MS] (Expert): Q: Will HEbrew Support be added to Windows Vista A: This is a very general question. Please submit any issue that you encounter as bugs, and we will forward them to the appropriate development team to work on.
Jeff DeVos (Expert): Q: Can we see some metrics about beta users involvement and fix rates ? A: We're planning to post some metrics and stats like this to the newsgroups (sometime soon, look for a post from PaulDon or one of us)
James Adams [MS] (Expert): Q: Will there be any major changes in the Volume Licensing Scheme for Windows Vista and Server Code Name "Longhorn"? A: That hasn't been decided yet, as far as I know. I'd guess that if there is a decision to be made on that, it'll be made closer to the end of the beta program.
Xi Wu [MS] (Expert): Q: Is Direct X 10, or whatever the codename is now going to be in a future build? A: yes
Vince Smith [MS] (Expert): Q: What are some of the major challenges you are facing now with developing Vista or have you passed that stage and its all smooth sailing now? A: If it was smooth sailing, we would ship it tomorrow! :) Developing a piece of software that is arguably the largest software project ever is more of an art then a science. Project managers try their best to predict dates and set goals, but with as many inter-dependencies as there are in Windows we never really know the exact date it's going to ship. Keeping all of the various teams on the same page is probably one of the hardest challenges we face.
Jarrod [MS] (Expert): Q: when will be the next build published ? A: When we feel a build has reached a certain quality level that is sufficient to have you guys/gals test it. It should be released sometime in the near future.
Jessep Bangham [MS] (Expert): Q: When can we have a verbal chat rather than a typing on like this? I would love to hear your voices ;) A: There might be a couple of things coming up where while you won't be able to speak directly with us you might be able to hear some of our voices. Hey, at least with the holiday video you were finally able to put a face to the names right?
Anouar CHELH [MS] (Expert): Q: Currently, Setup takes a while to install hardware, but the part of Windows Image performs good enough. When do you think this can be fixed - Interim builds, Release Candidates? A: Hardware installed on the machine do contribute a lot in the time it takes for the setup to complete.
Carl D [MS] (Expert): Q: Will HEbrew Support be added to Windows Vista A: I know there is a lot of work being done in this area.
Paul Donnelly [MS] (Expert): Q: How has this beta compared in terms of stability and user feedback to the XP beta? A: Stability wise we are way ahead of where we were on XP at this time. The number of bugchecks and hangs and crashes is lower for Vista. For cosmetic issues I think we're comparable. Feedback wise, on a build for build comparision we are comparable with feedback as well. We also have created some new feedback channels that we didn't have in XP, such as Scenario Votng and our "Tell us what you think" page. We have a similar number of beta sites as well. Our teams turnaround time is much better on Vista than XP. In XP we took on average 21 days to triage a bug and make a decision on it. For Vista at last check we are taking about 9 days so your feedback is getting to the product team quicker.
RichardD[MS] (Expert): Q: I am currently having major instability issues with build 5270 because of compatibility issues with my Creative Sound Blaster Live! 5.1 Card and my nVidia Geforce FX 5200 128MB AGP Card, they both cause 5270 to constantly blue screen, can I expect fix? A: For these types of issues, please submit bug reports with the .dmp file that should be created. We can analyze and .dmp file and ascertain where the faulty would be. The crash dump may not be related to these devices.
Sam White (Moderator): Q: How do developers share their time between adding features, fixing bugs and reading feedback? Is there a priority order for these tasks? A: It depends on the different phases of development that a particular project might be in (and sometimes on the particular team). I'm afraid there isn't one easy answer. I can say that high volume customer issues to get high priority and we make sure they get fixed before other work gets done.
Tony Chu [MS] (Expert): Q: Can we get more developer documentation for all the branches of WinFX, especially Windows Workflow? A: Please submit this request as feature request bug, and we will forward it to the appropriate development team to review it. Thank you for suggesting this feature request.
Carl D [MS] (Expert): Q: what's the highest build you've sen recently of Vista? A: Personally? 5295 :)
Jeff DeVos (Expert): Q: Do you plan to use Avalance for beta downloads in Vista timeframe ? A: No.
Jessep Bangham [MS] (Expert): Q: I read somewhere that Vista will be able to boot on the Intel Mac's? A: This is speculation as while they may be using an intel chipset that doesn't neccesarily mean that you will or will not be able to install it. I suppose we'll have to "wait and see" as Virtual PC isn't compatible with the new line of intel based macs.
Gawain OConnor [MS] (Expert): Q: When can we have a verbal chat rather than a typing on like this? I would love to hear your voices ;) A: It would be quite noisy to hear us all talking at once;-)
Paul Donnelly [MS] (Expert): Q: Outllok will not work in the 5270 server versions due to the lack of OE or MS Mail. Is there a workaround, or are we supposed to use third party software to do email? A: I'm not aware of this problem, but it sounds like a bug. We have systems here running Outlook on Longhonr server right now. If youhaven't filed a bug, please do so.
Vince Smith [MS] (Expert): Q: How do developers share their time between adding features, fixing bugs and reading feedback? Is there a priority order for these tasks? A: First developers work on bugs in existing code that are blocking other groups from developing or testing. Then it's split a lot of the time between feature development and 'minor' bug fixes. Bug fixes usually take priority, but it's definitely more complicated then just that. They read feedback, but program managers and testers spend more time reading customer feedback.
Sam White (Moderator): As a reminder to everyone, this isn't the right forum to ask about specific bugs in the product. Those should be directed to the newsgroups.
Vince Smith [MS] (Expert): Q: When will the next build of VIsta, IE7 coming out A: I don't know.
Anouar CHELH [MS] (Expert): Q: Will be Windows Vista ever ship on CD or is it now just DVD format A: The Windows Vista bit will be too big to fit in a CD (700 Mb) along with all divers that will be shipped with.
Jeff DeVos (Expert): Q: (Repost) Can we see some metrics about beta users involvement and fix rates ? A: Yes (answered already), should be a post to the newsgroups sometime soon.
Tony Chu [MS] (Expert): Q: Any news about List View in Windows Explorer? And the possibility to stop sorting zip files as if they were folders? A: This is a known issue. We hope to have a fix for this issue in the future release builds. Thank you for asking this question as it is one of the most duplicated report.
Jessep Bangham [MS] (Expert): Q: When will IE 7 BEta 2 be released? A: It will be released when it's ready to be released. I'm sorry I can't give you any detailed information on that as there has not been an announced date.
Paul Donnelly [MS] (Expert): Q: Is it true that there is a January CTP for TAP testers? No specifics of course. A: No. There is no January CTP, for TAP or anyone.
Mike Adams[MS] (Expert): Q: Can you please repear answer #15 for those who came in late A: Per Paul "Noting is every over until it's over, but right now, we are fully on target for our feature complete plans. CTP's have been made a quality oriented milestone but even so it's looking good to get another one soon."
Anouar CHELH [MS] (Expert): Q: Anouar CHELH: I think he means multiple CDs. I believe we're all wondering about this. A: for now I beleive it will be just in DVDs.
Vince Smith [MS] (Expert): Q: are there any plans to have a blog site for the Windows Beta Team? A: There are no plans currently, but I will add this to my work item list and bring it up at our next planning meeting.
Tony Chu [MS] (Expert): Q: Is the Rate this Computer Fixed in later builds than 5270? A: Yes, this issue should be fixed in the future release builds. Thank you for asking this question.
Paul Donnelly [MS] (Expert): Q: When do you plan to have the public CTP program instated? A: When we feel that it's ready for a more "average" user to install and use we'll consider a public preview. Certain things need to work very well for this to happen such as upgrade and migration. Right now we're counting on Savvy users such as yourselves to help us get it there.
Jessep Bangham [MS] (Expert): Q: Roughly how many posts, bugreps and suggestions etc. do you have to go through in a typical week? A: This depends entirely on the individual two weeks ago I didn't have anything coming in. At this point in the beta I go through 1-200 bugs a week. In another week or so, that number will be down as the incoming bug count would have slowed down and my backlog will have been whittled away as well. The number is always changing.
Sam White (Moderator): Q: Are there areas of the beta program such as feature focus, scenario voting that you would like to see more participation, or things we could do in a different way to currenlty? A: We generally leave this up to the individual beta tester since we know that different people have different amounts of time to spend testing. Right now I can say that the Scenario Voting is a little more underutilized than we would like. So helping out there would be great.
Xi Wu [MS] (Expert): Q: What's going to be the final minimum spec for glass? 64Mb Graphics card that supports DX9? A: No minimum spec at this point, this is because not all GPU chips have the capacity to run glass no matter how much memory it got. So we can't just say if you have this much memory it will work.
Vince Smith [MS] (Expert): Q: How many % of Microsoft employees are already running Vista on their daily machines? A: it's required in the Windows org. Outside of Windows, I believe it's just advised for now. Eventually most people will be prodded into running it before we ship.
Anouar CHELH [MS] (Expert): Q: When will Vista be compatible with MSN8? A: I would think so.
Rich Lieb[MS] (Expert): Q: How long until we start seeing Vista-specific video cards hit the market? A: As we approach RTM of Vista it is likely that both ATI and Nvidia will have their drivers WHQL certified.
Carl D [MS] (Expert): Q: Will be the help menus be added soon to Vista? I noticed that not all help works and is missing A: Traditionally, from my own experience ymmv, Help usually starts to firm up after Code Complete.
Paul Donnelly [MS] (Expert): Q: Roughly what percentage of testers can't isntall at the moment due to various install problems? A: I don't have a precise answer to that right now but the rough numbers look like people that are truly blocked would be no more than 7% range. There are a number of people who hit problems but were able to subsequently work around them.
Jessep Bangham [MS] (Expert): Q: What is the one thing you would like to see us beta testers do better? A: Scenario voting, standard feedback within the newsgroups, efficient and detailed bugs with proper repro steps, screen shots and dump files if there was a crash. That would REALLY help us out in our triaging process as we wouldn't need to contact people as often and experience as much delay in the process.
Tony Chu [MS] (Expert): Q: How many % of Microsoft employees are already running Vista on their daily machines? A: Most of us are being told (encourage) to run Vista on our daily production machines if possible.
Christina [MS] (Expert): Q: :) Is there specific areas to test the Dec build before the next one come out? A: If you haven't already, you may want to check out Scenario Voting (Link available on our Microoft Connect beta page). We continue to work with product teams for new scenarios and to bring you new feature focus opportunities.
Paul Donnelly [MS] (Expert): Q: Will there be a public Vista beta at any time? A: It is likely though no final plans are in place.
Sam White (Moderator): Q: I thought Vista was going to be available on spanned CDs, has this been scrapped? A: There hasn't been fina decisions on what exactly will be going in the actual boxes.
Gawain OConnor [MS] (Expert): Q: Will the issue of contacts under Microsoft mail be fixed so one can send mail to each other? A: I haven't heard back on that one yet, but I did submit it.
Vince Smith [MS] (Expert): Q: When will Vista stop looking for floppy disks? I thought MS was killing it off? A: I swear, floppy disks are going to be around long after I'm gone. :) They are the roaches of the computer industry, the 3.5" floppy has survived for 25 years.
Rich Lieb[MS] (Expert): Q: Will Beta testers get a free copy of Vista when it comes out? A: While some copies will be given out as prizes for those testers that have significant contributions, not every tester will be given a copy when Vista is released.
James Adams [MS] (Expert): Q: When is the launch date, I want to win the contest ;) A: Nice try. ;)
Tenny_MS (Expert): Q: Wil; Vista be compatible with Norton Antivirus and Macafee>? A: We are actively working with the ISVs for compatible AV solutions.
Sam White (Moderator): Q: Will it be possible to publish the transcript to this chat in blogs and/or forums once it finishes? A: We post these to the Connect website in an archive with the rest of the chats. This one should be up in a day or so. I'll post to the .announcements group when that happens.
EleeY [MS] (Expert): Q: Is anything being done to document duplicate issues? Currenlty information regarding these is sporadic in newgroup postings.Perhaps a page on connect or Windowsbeta? A: Duplicates are documented internally in our DB's. We'll look into posting better information in the newsgroups for users benefit.
Anouar CHELH [MS] (Expert): Q: is there likely to be a Beta 3 before RC0? A: We do not know at the current time if we will have Beta 3 or not.
Carl D [MS] (Expert): Q: Can we see photo of "Hall of Fame" ? A: Who's? :)
Paul Donnelly [MS] (Expert): Q: Will there be a "driver pack install" on the desktop in RTM to cut down on install time, or will it all be integrated in? A: Right now we are not planning on having a separate driver pack at RTM.
Rich Lieb[MS] (Expert): Q: Is HD-DVD support in vista yet, even though there arent any consumer drives out? A: not at this time as these drives arent in production.
Sam White (Moderator): Q: is there an area that is developing Vista with only the home user in mind? I would like to see more emphasis placed on the home user and things that willl frustrate them. Especially those that have little computer knowledge. A: Yes, we have people who specifically work on this user type to make sure there needs are addressed.
Mike Adams[MS] (Expert): Q: Have you had contact with the office "12" team, will the next build be vista compatable? A: This is ongoing and will just continue to get better every week. No promises on the next build compatibility but I would presume it would be nice to have. ;)
Sam White (Moderator): Q: Will Beta Testers get a final copy for free when Vista SHips A: We get this question a lot and I'll have to give the standard answer. We don't have a final decision and probably won't until near the end of the program.
Christina [MS] (Expert): Q: Will we see more Beta languages for coming releases (e.g. Spain, French etc.) and not only German and Japanese? A: During the beta, we will have only English, German and Japanese available.
Carl D [MS] (Expert): Q: Will Solutions to Problems, Solutions actually work before beta 2 stage, when I click a solution, a web page comes up telling me it will work in beta 2 A: This, like Help, will be getting better. You should see improvements very soon. Sorry for the fortune cookie answer but there are at least 10 issues I can think of off the top of my head being worked on in different area's.
Carl D [MS] (Expert): Q: will be the windowsmedia player support different formats?, ape, ogg, aac etc.. A: Have you sent in suggestions for these?
Vince Smith [MS] (Expert): Q: What do you think of those sites that collect Windows Vista/Longhorn build numbers, post them and trade them like they are baseball cards, is this normal? A: that's weird, but cool that they are excited about it. around here we are always focused on what is wrong or going bad (so that we can fix it), it's easy to forget that people out there are excited even about the build number.
Paul Donnelly [MS] (Expert): Q: Will Beta Testers get a final copy for free when Vista SHips A: We have not determined whether or not we will do this. If we do it will likely be to reward people who contributed to the prodcuts quality. That means we would look for people who filed bugs, answered relevant surveys and voted on scenarios among other things.
Jessep Bangham [MS] (Expert): Q: jessep, can MS give us some adive on better bug reporting, I personally find it tough as mine are usually in the heat of the moment so probally incoherant A: Yes, we are actually in the process of this at this very moment. I have been taking feedback on what makes a great bug from each branch of the triage process and we are looking into what we can do to give you more information on this. We are also going into additional tools to make bug reporting more efficient and productive all the time. Thanks for asking about this and it might take a little bit but I am very excited on what we are doing right now!
Tenny_MS (Expert): Q: Can we get a proper recording thing going for the Beta Client? Also, it should maximise to full screen size. Otherwise its just irritating. A: Can you define "proper"? The current recorder is targeted mainly for shell related issues but we are making improvements. We worked on the max issue previously and will take another look to improve it for the next version.
Tony Chu [MS] (Expert): Q: Are there any AV products out there that work with the Visa and Longhorn Betas today? A: Yes, there is a list of working AV products in the Newsgroup, compiled by beloved beta testers.
Sam White (Moderator): Q: Re: 162 - I believe they were asking if we were allowed to post the transcript, in some past chats we were asked to refrain from posting it for awhile A: You can post the transcript on your blog if you like. There is no embargo period for this one.
Xi Wu [MS] (Expert): Q: So if we start purchasing some of the new video cards coming out around March and now, they should be 100% spec'd to work with Vista? There won't be any extra requirements cards of today don't have yet? A: No, not all the new GPU will be supported.
Christina [MS] (Expert): Q: Do the scenarios have a deadline? I seem able to go back and fill out surveys for previous dates. Is this bad? A: For Scenario Voting, we invite you to submit feedback for the same scenario on various builds as your experience chnages.
EleeY [MS] (Expert): Q: Has backup and restore been tested a lot in the Vista builds? Any know issues? A: Yes, those are known issues and is currently being investigated.
RichardD[MS] (Expert): Q: The audio device control seems to be very poor in 5270...will we see much improvement in the next CTP? A: We are still going through many changes. We hope to have a Feature Focus on Volume control by the Fedbruary CTP; though this may change.
Carl D [MS] (Expert): Q: Carl D: "Hall of Fame" = https://connect.microsoft.com/content/content.aspx?SiteID=4&ContentID=762 "We will collect the pictures until December 31st"... A: No word yet that I can see. Keep on sending them in to with a subject of "Vista Picture". Questions will be answered in the Beta_Program newsgroup.
Tenny_MS (Expert): Q: Tenny (172): I mean that it would record a video, not just describe what's happening in XML. A: It's not a function of the recorder in the MBC; might be something we look into implementing for a future beta.
Tony Chu [MS] (Expert): Q: Just arrived and don't know if it has been asked but not only the rate that computer is not working, it's the all rate at all, if I want to rate a song coming let's say from my backup drive, Vista doesn't want to do it, same goes for pictures. A: Yes, "rate" the computer feature should be working properly in the future release builds. Yes, this is one of the most reported/duplicate bugs.
EleeY [MS] (Expert): Q: How many of you are on the Vista BETA Team, if you don’t mind? A: Everyone you see on the Experts list, plus a few more who couldn't make it to the chat session today.

Paul Donnelly [MS] (Expert): Q: What can be done about Ebay selling builds of Vista on the Web? I have noticed it becoming an issues alot? A: Yes, they are showing up faster than we can buy them. :-) Send mail to LHAbuse@microsoft.com
Paul Donnelly [MS] (Expert): Q: How many versions of WIndows Vista will be released? A: Final details are not, well final.
Sam White (Moderator): We have about 15 minutes to go everyone.
Tenny_MS (Expert): Q: I've got a set of DVD's of Office 12 as official beta tester, it says clearly Vista is not a supported platform, yet I can install Office 12 (2007) without any trouble on build 5270, care to explain me that? A: "Not supported" doesn't necessarily mean it won't work; just that it's not an ideal supported scenario (Beta on Beta).
Dean Frost [MS] (Expert): Q: What about Windows Updtae in Vista? Will this feature be available soon to test??? :P A: Windows Update should be working for everyone. If you are having some issues, please submit a bug and we can look into it.
Rich Lieb[MS] (Expert): Q: Will Nero 6.*** work in later builds than 5270? Seeing its build 5270 that broke it in the first place? A: As this is a legacy version, the attention will fall upon Nero version 7 rather than version 6; however I believe 6 will function.
Sam White (Moderator):
Q: I love some of the PDC Vista SWAG (like the WinFX mug, and the posters
like the namespace poster): is it possible to buy any of it? Or will you be dishing
stuff out?
A: OK, noted.
EleeY [MS] (Expert):
Q: System Restore each time I run it says it couldn't work, but did anyway
in build 5270, is it a known bug and fixed in later builds?
A: It's a known bug. Thanks.
Tenny_MS (Expert):
Q: will acronis trueimage 9.1 home edtion work with vista build
5270!!!
A: Try it and submit a bug report if it doesn't it :)
Sam White (Moderator):
Q: Does Microsoft plan to build Virtual CD-Roms into the OS, like using
the VCD tool?
A: I haven't heard of any plans for this. It's not on the list for Vista.
Anouar CHELH [MS] (Expert):
Q: What bunbled applications (Paint, Notepad, Wordpad...etc), are getting
a retouch for Vista? I mean, when you see that Linux offers openoffice and GIMP,
and apple offers a dictionary and all that, Windows seems like its lacking in value.
A: Our product team for those built-in apps are working to improve them along
the way of Vista development.
Jessep Bangham [MS] (Expert):
Q: Does the windows Vista Beta Team feel refreshed after your Christamas/New
